Dave Shirk, PE of Buchart Horn’s Environmental Group and his Boy Scout’s Troop 99 were recently featured in the May-June 2014 issue ofScouting Magazine in the article “Adventures of a Super Troop.” Dave is the Scout Master of the Lancaster-based Troop and has dedicated more than 34 years to scouting and does not see himself “ever not being a scout.” Troop 99 is an adventurous group and constantly on the go partaking in more than 60 trips within the past year including a week-long trip to Smith Island.
During this trip to Smith Island and Port Isobel located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, Dave and the Troop learned about the “fragile, endangered ecosystem”, worked to rebuild a dock ramp and picnic tables, and experienced how to dredge for oysters and use sea-grass beds to catch soft-shell crabs. The scouts of Troop 99 have been to Maine for a camping trip, traveled to West Virginia to conquer white water rafting, and hiked the Appalachian Trail thanks in large part to the dedicated adults including Dave who make each trip fun and educational.
