In celebration of National Public Works Week and Arbor Day, the Borough of State College held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, May 16th at their new Public Works Complex, designed by Buchart Horn.
Associate Vice President + Director of Design, W. Scott Loercher, AIA, NCARB was on-site for the festivities and to provide some insight on all of the sustainable design elements at the Complex.
The new facility featured two new vehicle storage buildings, a new administration building, new wash bays, new salt/gravel storage bays, and relocation/replacement of an existing pavilion.
The goal of this project was to be a model project for social, environmental, and economic sustainability as well as energy reduction, flooding remediation, and reduced emissions all while using the unique resource opportunities at the site. Public Works representatives were on site at the event to demonstrate these sustainability initiatives at the facility like rainwater harvesting, composting, and recycling. The Borough handed out tree saplings to attendees in observance of Arbor Day.
