The West Campus Steam Services Building on Penn State University’s University Park campus is a highly visible landmark due to its proximity to the downtown area and its architectural details that pay homage to the original steam plant. The Steam Services Building supports PSU’s Physical Plant operations displaced by the adjacent steam plant’s capital project to convert from coal to natural gas.
The new three-story Steam Services Building provides 33,264 square feet of administrative, training, and shop space. Buchart Horn served as the designer-of-record under prime consultant Burns & McDonnell. In addition to architectural design, BH also provided interior design and civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering services. The project was delivered under a CM at Risk contract with Alexander Construction and was completed in August 2019.
The building was designed to LEED Silver standards and is expected to receive certification in 2020.
